ARTIST'S COLLECTION

The essence of this painting is ‘nature’s repetition.’ There is a repetition in nature that appears in all things: rocks, clouds, plants, animals, people, ad infinitum.  Similar configurations happen over and over all the way down to the microscopic world.  A configuration of a bird or a human face appears in the clouds.  The whorls of a fingerprint appear in nature’s designs not visible to the naked eye and even in outer space.  Nature’s designs echo from the past to the present and into the future.

This painting started out to be a simple expression of that phenomenon, a vista of echoing blue horizons.  Have you ever looked at a ridge and seen a face? That’s what happened as the close ridges were painted, human profiles appeared and old souls came to mind.  And are rocks not old souls?  What is told about old souls?  Old stories, of course.  As even in painting a schemed and well-drafted drawing, let alone a spontaneous expression of an idea, one thing can lead to another for an unplanned feature to evolve; hence, two Mescalero Apache storytellers by a campfire in a cave became born (see detail).  As the Native Americans used to name places as The Place of this or The Place of that, the painting named itself.

That’s how Blue Horizons became The Place of Old Stories and Old Souls.
